The 2009 - 2010 school year begins for all Normandy students on Monday, August 17, 2009. Students should report to their assigned building sites at the regular time prepared for the first day of educational activities.
Prior to the start of school you can help prepare your student by reminding them of the importance an education makes in terms of future job and career decisions, post-secondary educational opportunities, and their general feeling of fulfillment and self-worth. Also, it would be very appropriate to talk about the up coming school year and set some goals together that will help keep them on track and you involved with their educational progress.
For many students, doing a few simple things in preparation for the start of school can enhance their success in the classroom, for example:
- develop a "school night" routine related to when homework should be done and how TV or other entertainment fits into the regular study routine of the day
- set curfew limits for school nights to assure that your student receives the proper rest to enable them to function effectively the next day at school
- develop a wake-up routine that established the school-day wake up time and preparation for leaving for school to ensure that your student arrives each day on time and ready
- develop a reading schedule that will challenge your student to read and explain what they understand from there reading on a regular basis
- create a calendar that your student uses at home to record up-coming assignments, reports, tests, and other tasks related to school so that you and your student can work together to make sure each assignment or task receives enough time to be completed properly and to assure that each is turned in on time
- make a commitment to your student to help them when ever needed, and to regularly check with them and with the school regarding their progress
- help clear the way so your student can do their very best
Normandy School District is a great place to learn and we look forward to working with you to help your student succeed!
